It all started as a seed in a journal…

Who are we?

We are a small, family owned, 14-acre farm located in Berwick, Maine, just over the New Hampshire/Maine state line on Route 9 / School Street. We, James, Silas, and our daughter, along with our human-loving dog and many other farm creatures find endless joy in our farm life. Berwick, ME has been a welcoming community for us since we began planting our tree and lavender fields in the Spring of 2022. Each year we have been planting around 1,700 trees and 100 lavender plants. 2024 is our first year with lambing and growing our flock of sheep.

How did we get here?

Both James and Silas grew up on and around farms in Newmarket, NH. James comes from a family that moved to rural Newmarket to get out of the city. His grandparents bought a homestead, raised West Highland White Terriers, and this is where he and his brothers were raised in their own family home. Silas comes from a 30+ year family history of Christmas tree farming, and extended family of Vermont dairy farmers. His parents moved to Newmarket and began planting Christmas trees in their yard for Choose-and-Cut operations and began Archambault Tree Farm. Silas and his siblings have many memories in tree plantations.

Why the three crops?

Growing Christmas trees was the baseline for our operations. We have family history in the industry and generational knowledge being passed down to us. It just made sense to start here.

Lavender is a dream, but also a tried and true crop for folks in the area. Although it requires occasional pruning throughout the year, it is too potent for deer, sheep, and most other animals to bother it, and lavender is drought-tolerant.

The Shropshire sheep were the last crop to make it to the table, but they are the most important for our work. Female Shropshire sheep (ewes) and their lambs will not bother either the lavender OR the Christmas trees, but rather they just keep weeds down, reduce mowing, fertilize and improve the soil. All the while they also produce wool and food for our community - and they are really sweet animals - how could we say no?
